Tulsa Tough on 35mm Film

Kodak Gold 200, Contax G2 45mm

A couple of weeks ago I took my cameras out to take in the cycling criteriums hosted annually the first weekend of June. I had a new to me camera, the Contax T2, to test as well as a camera I have had a few months, the Contax G2. The T2 has a 38mm 2.8 lens while with a max shutter speed of 1/500 while my Contax G2 has both a 28mm 2.8 and 45mm 2.0 with a max shutter speed of 1/6000. I was kind of curious how both would do capturing the speed of cycling races and the street photos of the people who came out to watch the race. This isn’t an in-depth comparison, but rather just a showcase of some of my favorite images. I’ve done my best to also include the film that each photo was taken with. The films that I used are as follows:

  1. Kodak Ultramax 400, overexposed 1 stop

  2. Kodak Gold 200

  3. Cinestill 800T, overexposed 1 stop

  4. Expired Fujifilm Superia 400, overexposed 1 stop

  5. Ektar 100

  6. Ilford HP5 Plus Pushed +2

These definitely aren’t all portfolio shots, but I think they showcase a bit of the range of activities you can capture with both of them. I am very happy with how both performed. If I could only take one I would probably choose the Contax T2 because of the form factor, lack of distraction using a small camera to capture street candids, and the quality of images that it was able to capture. I find the motion blur of the action shots acceptable for both because it captures the speed and feel of the event. What do you think? Leave me a comment and let me know what you think…which camera, lens, or film stocks are your favs?

For the record, my fav race image was taken with the G2 on Kodak Gold 200. My favorite street image is the Ektar 100 photo of the event photographer taken with the T2. The HP5 shots are pretty great as well.

Contax G2 Photos - this collection includes images taken with both 45mm and 28mm lenses.

Kodak Gold 200 - to be honest, I was finishing off a roll, so I don’t have a lot of photos from this roll.
